Written By Wazzup Pilipinas on Biyernes, Mayo 10, 2013 | 7:43 AM

Users unfamiliar with the dialect in Central Visayas and some parts of Mindanao can now count on Google Translate to communicate better with the locals. Users versed in Cebuano but not in other languages can use the tool as well to comprehend information online or offline.

Google Translate now supports the Cebuano language and four others (Bosnian, Hmong, Javanese, and Marathi), reaching a milestone of more than 70 languages hosted. With the exception of Bosnian, the languages are in the early stages of development or “alpha” stage, and can be expected to improve over time.

When combined, the added languages are spoken by over 183 million people in the world. “Google Translate helps bridge the divide between the content available online and people’s ability to access that information,” said Sveta Kelman, Google Translate Program Manager.

To do this, SunIM uses the text messaging feature of a phone, translating mobile chat into text messages seamlessly, and giving regular cellular phone users access to a service that would usually only be available to people with smart phones.

The service also allows you to send messages using your laptop, smart phone, or computer. It integrates several platforms: Yahoo Messenger, Facebook chat, MSN, AIM, ICQ, and, just recently, Gmail chat, making all your accounts available to you on one sign-in page. It is, to date, the only platform to do so.

Broadcast networks ABS-CBN, GMA, PTV, and SOLARtv, and online news portals Rappler, PhilStar.com, Inquirer.net and Interaksyon.com collaborated with Google Philippines to create Google.com.ph/elections. The site is a one-stop online hub for elections-related news and information created to help 53 million Filipino voters, including 700,000 absentee voters abroad, stay updated about the coming polls.

“We want to make sure citizens have a quick access to information to help them make informed decisions on election day,” said Narciso Reyes, Google Philippines Country Manager. “This is part of our commitment to bring to the Filipinos essential information that will make their lives easier and more meaningful.”

The Elections Page will allow Filipinos to engage with candidates through a variety of Google’s platforms, such as live-streamed debates on YouTube hosted by the media collaborators. “Through the different components we included on the page, Filipinos can discuss issues with the candidates, or exchange views with reporters or other citizens on Google+ Hangouts.
