Know Your Game Genre
Written By Wazzup Pilipinas on Linggo, Setyembre 2, 2012 | 5:16 AM
“Gamers” should get their game genre (RPG, Action, Driving, etc) right. We can all argue that any game is an “adventure” but there is a reason why several game genres were coined over the years. I believe the reason was to differentiate games and lessen the confusion as to what one can expect from any particular game.
Genre classifications can be a useful tool. Sure they may be a label, but sometimes labels are a good thing. Without a label, a jar of water looks very similar to a jar of bleach. Knowing the difference is pretty important. Genre classifications can help you get your head around what a game may bring to the table before you plop your money down and get stuck with it.
The point-and-click adventure games of decades past will always have a special place in my gaming heart. Games like Grim Fandango, The Monkey Island Series, Full Throttle & Day of the Tentacle are particularly noteworthy.
For more recent games, I’d have to recommend ones from the action-adventure genre. Games like Assassin’s Creed comes to mind. Other games that can be considered a good adventure fall under the shooter genre already like Lost Planet, Dead Space, Splinter Cell.
Anyway, those are just some of my recommendations.
